Falmouth Classics
Saturday 9th August - A Celebration of Sail
2008 sees the celebration of the twentieth year of Falmouth Classics regattas. This annual event gets the week off to a good start with festivities for all the family.
It has a reputation for being a relaxed regatta, the racing not being considered as important as the fun and camaraderie associated with traditional boats and the people who sail them.
Over the years feeder races from Plymouth and Fowey have contributed to swelling the more local fleets and generally enhancing the many different vessels that make it to Falmouth.
In past years the numbers have exceeded three hundred boats ranging from 12ft jolly boats to 80ft schooners, giving the hapless race officer a few headaches. However the nature of the regatta is one that endorses seamanship above racing honours, resulting in very few incidents or mishaps on the water.
This year, due to a new berthing facility within the Docks complex, Falmouth will be playing host to some classic superyachts. This will be the first time a number of vessels of this type will have raced in Falmouth Bay since the nineteen twenties and thirties when the port last played host to the ‘Sport of Kings’.
Pendennis Shipyard, who will be putting up a cup for the races, will be co-hosting the event with the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association.
It is hoped this will herald the start of a renewed chapter in Falmouth’s history, when not only classic boats of all sizes join in a celebration of sail each August, but with their revival worldwide, classic superyachts will annually grace our port as well.
