Golder Associates Champagne Day

File 200

This year's host club for the GOLDER ASSOCIATES CHAMPAGNE DAY is FALMOUTH TOWN SAILING CLUB. The Port of Falmouth Sailing Association would like to thank THE FALMOUTH TOWN REGATTA COMMITTEE for their fantastic effort in keeping the traditions of the Champagne Race alive for so many years, with a special mention of gratitude to Henry Roberts ,chairman of that committee.

This years Champagne Race will allow ALL yachts in IRC and PY 1&2 to take part, also for the first time MOCRA multihulls will be included. We will adjust the course to suit the conditions on the day,it will still be a long race in keeping with tradition. The finish will be to the west of Pendennis point for the Bay yachts.

The Champagne prizegiving by the Mayor of Falmouth and teas for the Bay and Carrick fleets will be held at the "Falmouth Watersports Centre " in Grove Place

All classes in the Bay and Carrick Fleets with receive a  champagne prize.  The Dinghy Fleet will receive special prizes at Restronguet Sailing Club.

The Champagne Race celebrates the time when back in 1951, the late Lord Shawcross was competing against his friend Jack Silley. The spirit of the competition was so keen that one day both friends broke away from the main race in which they were taking part, in order to informally settle the result between themselves. The loser in good grace presented a case of champagne to the winner and so the Champagne Race was born.

In 1955 Philip Fox of GC Fox & Co, the then chairman, started the first official Champagne Race to be sailed under the Falmouth Town Flag, by donating a case of champagne as first prize. Today all classes of keel boat get their chance.

THANKYOU TO GOLDER ASSOCIATES FOR SPONSORING US AGAIN THIS YEAR.
